Can vision get worse after Laser Refractive Surgery?

It's in my genetics for my vision to keep getting worse, but if one gets laser eye surgery at age 16, could vision possibly get worse after the procedure? Also, does wearing glasses cause vision to worsen?

  1. Well, everyone's vision gets worse. Most people who have eye surgery don't have any problems with it, but there is a risk that it won't work. I actually only know one person who got it but it just didn't work, but that's 1 out of about 15 people that I know who got it. I don't know anyone who got worse vision from it after a while. Glasses do make your eyes worse, so surgery would be the way to go.
  2. The simple answer, is yes, your vision can get worse after Lasik. This is why it is a good idea to ensure that you have stopped growing, or more so that your eyes have stopped growing before you have the surgery. In the US, the FDA regulates Lasik to patients over the age of 18. Wait till your vision has stabilized for at least 2 years before getting the surgery. as for your question on if wearing glasses causes your vision to worsen, there is no clear cut answer. many will argue yes, while other will argue no. Glasses do not do anything to change the shape of your eye, but some would argue that staring at things too closely with glasses on can cause your vision to worsen.
  3. A reputable surgeon usually won't perform refractive surgery until you are done growing (early 20's) and have had several exams with a stable prescription. Wearing glasses helps you see better. Your brain gets used to the higher quality images. I feel like I see worse now than when i first got my glasses, but my prescription has really not changed much over the years, so I know that I'm just used to seeing better. I didn't really know how bad my eyes were until I got my first pair!
