Whats the advantages and disadvatages of having refractive surgery to correct myopia?

Public Comments

  1. My friend had it and now she can see perfectly. She can swim, run, do all the things that are restricted by wearing glasses. The disadvantages are the possibility of still having to wear glasses in later life something going wrong the cost. I know when you work out the cost of glasses or contacts over your lifetime it is fine but it is the initial outlay. All things aside, if I could have it I would. My eyes however are continuing to deteriorate slowly so I am not a candidate for surgery
  2. By lasers? Pl. be more specific. If the surgery is successful, no need for glasses and contacts. If not, you will still need glasses and a lot of money, unnecessary scarring of eye etc. Discuss with an eye surgeon and look up on internet from sites that give medical information.
  3. Problem is that nobody really knows what the long term effects may be. What they do is shave of bits of your cornea to correct your myopia. However if you are also astigmatic it gets a bit tricky. My own opinion is why have invasive surgery when you don't need to! Phil FBDO
  4. Refractive surgery is like Laser surgery for the eyes. The advantages are corrects eye problems like myopia ( nearsighted ) hyperopia farsigted astignmatism near and far objects are blurry decreases the dependance for glasses and or contact lenses. The drawback is this is not for everyone anyone with diabetes or glaucoma any surgery is risky the doctor needs to inform the patient who is going to go through this.
